About connieinasia

I have been in the Asia region for 27 years as an English language teacher. A majority of those have been in China with the Amity Foundation , a Chinese NGO that works in all areas of development for the Chinese people. Covid stranded me in America for over 3 years, with China closing its boarders to returning teachers. In 2023, I was accepted into a new teaching role not in China but in Laos. Join me in experiencing this incredible journey into a different culture, a different language, and a different life.

An Old Building; Innovative Additions

The single teacher’s apartment building I live in, along with the Peace Corp folk, is one of the oldest on campus.  Plumbing is a mess.  Mold is a constant.  Electrical wiring is iffy. You’ll also remember that during the summer, … Continue reading

Note: Internet connection problems have delayed me for a week to post these. The China Telecom worker has been here to say that the telephone lines in my home are so old that they need to be replacing.  This is a huge problem. We’ve … Continue reading

Trekking to the Luzhou Church on Sunday: Not for the Weak of Stomach

I have to wonder if our pioneering Methodist Canadian missionaries had the same feelings as I sometimes do when, in 1913, they made their way down the narrow alleyways leading to their newly-built, pristine worship center and sanctuary. I especially … Continue reading

All for the Love of Birds: A Rural King Shopping Venture

Our record subzero temperatures in the Midwest had my mom and me staying indoors as much as possible during the past few days. Even Lao-lao (Old-old), our China Chi rescue, hunkered down in his doggie bed, hoping we’d forget about … Continue reading

Honoring My Dad: A Worthy Send-off

Today is President’s Day, quite an appropriate time to address last week’s send-off for my father, a politically-minded individual and strong advocate of the American right to vote. As the only Civics teacher in our  high school, who taught a … Continue reading
